There are a lot of challenges for women in surgery, and also for surgery, really, around being welcoming and accessible to women. One of the main reasons is that about 60-70% of our medical undergraduates are female, and so if we’re not able to attract a significant percentage of women into surgery then we lose a wealth of expertise and knowledge in surgery. So it’s a real challenge. And transplant surgery is particularly difficult, but I think that’s primarily because it does require a lot of out of hours operating, and many surgical specialities have been able to move away from that. In transplant surgery, we do have to go out to retrieve organs across quite a wide geographical area, and that can often be at night. But there are a handful of us, probably around 7 or 8 of us across the UK now, and so the numbers are increasing. And again, I think the interest in transplantation and breadth of interest in transplantation is appealing to women – the ethical challenges, the clinical challenges, as well as the surgically technical challenges if you like.
