There are two things that really drew me to kidney transplantation. One is the incredible impact a kidney transplant has on a patient. If a kidney transplant works well and immediately, then the patient feels better immediately. So, I go and see a patient the morning after I’ve transplanted their kidney and they will say, ‘I haven’t felt like this since before I started dialysis.’ It is as if the clouds have cleared. Now, as a surgeon that is incredibly rewarding and there are very few other operations that have that immediate benefit for patients. So that is immensely rewarding. And the second area is around research. I really find the challenges of how we can improve long term outcome of kidney transplants by undertaking laboratory-based research and bringing it into clinical practice exciting.
