Transplant is a spectrum, and the transplant that people have is a spectrum of experience. And you will react to a transplant partly based on your personality, partly based on your own idiosyncratic response to a transplant, and partly also things that are nothing to do with your control; to do with, if you like – and it’s not a term that I like using to do with donor organs – but to do with the quality of the donor organ that you receive and how much rejection you get. And how many complications you have afterwards. All of that produces its own set of issues. Some people react very positively to all of that, some are more negative. I think the truth is that, if you look at the vast majority of patients, they have responded immensely positively to this – they do feel the transformative effect of transplantation.

And a story of so many patients who have come in, and who are ill, post-transplantation they’ve had something else happen to them, and they come in – they tend to come back to the transplant unit because other doctors feel it’s best if they’re managed on the transplant unit – and they come along and they’re clearly very ill, clearly nigh on to death. And one of the first questions the patients have is, ‘How’s my transplant?’ It’s not, ‘How am I?’ It’s not, ‘How close am I to death?’ They are terrified that their transplant is not working. And I think that is the distillation of their concern about the transplant, and actually how much it means to them. So I think that’s the vast majority of people. Of course there are also people who have had a tough time, a really tough time, and who find it very difficult to think about going on with this transplant or, in cases where it’s possible, a re-do liver transplant or a re-do kidney transplant, going back into that again. But you’ll find that most patients will actually tend to do that – they will say that life with the transplant is significantly better than life without it.
