The Photographer

Tim Wainwright uses photography, film and sound to investigate the nature and consequences of transformation and to enable people to tell their stories.

He has shown his work around the world, in museums, galleries, and public and private spaces. It has included large-scale visual and sonic installations, photographic documentary projects and abstract collections.

The original idea of working with transplant patients emerged from an approach Tim made to the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust in 2006. He worked with sound artist John Wynne to create 'Transplant' in 2006-7. This represented the third element in a series of works exploring what he considers to be the four elements of being human - mind, body, heart and soul.

With regard to this series he has chronicled  the lives of the severely mentally ill, of people with cancer and is now completing the final element of the quartet with ‘About Soul’ a project examining what soul means to a variety of Londoners in their everyday lives.

“Far from being made into mirrors for his own fears, his subjects are allowed to ‘speak’ for themselves. His interest isn’t in showing the differences in their self-image but simply in observing that each of them has a self-image.” (Charles Darwent)
